The numbers fell short, the farewell did not
The Golden Boot went to Mbappé, who added another goal in the third-place play-off, and the Golden Ball to Rodri, who ran the midfield for Spain. Messi was left with the Silver Boot and the Silver Ball, yet those awards shone gold. At forty, the numbers he left at the 2026 World Cup stand next to those of players in their prime and somehow read as an even higher class: the finest way to bow out.

Forty long days later, Messi's last World Cup is over. In the final, Spain pinned Argentina back with the passing and pressing that define them, and when Enzo Fernández was sent off in the second half the game tilted for good. Ferran Torres settled it in extra time: 0-1. Argentina fought with everything it had, but the gap in quality was never closed. A cruel result, and yet everything Messi produced on the way to that final moved the countless fans behind him, and had them applauding even in defeat.
